How To Protect Your Windshield From Winter Cracking
Tis the season for heavy snowfall (skiing or boarding, anyone?), icy roads (hot chocolate and cozying by the fireplace?) and of course windshield cracks. Didn't realize this? Well, anytime the temperature hits twenty degrees or below small cracks in your windshield can expand and quickly! However, you won't have to deal with costly repairs this winter as long as you follow these helpful tips:
- Don't use hot water to defrost your windshield. Even luke-warm water can be potentially dangerous. Instead turn on your defroster and let it warm up slowly. Extreme temperature changes are one of the fastest ways to cause damage to your windshield.
- Only remove ice with a proper scraper. In other words, to avoid scratches that can cause more serious chips don't use random objects found hanging out in the backseat of your car or trunk.
- Keep your windshield and wipers clean. Always make sure you have an excess amount of windshield wiper fluid on hand and remove excess dirt from wipers to avoid scratching and resulting cracks or chips.
- Replace old wiper blades with new ones. Windshield wipers can erode easily and cause serious damage to the glass. Buy a pair of winter wiper blades to handle Utah's stormy weather since they are more durable in heavy winds and snow fall.
Keep in mind that even the smallest rock chip can turn into a big problem and fast—especially during the winter time. So, repair all your windshield cracks (even the small ones) right away. Besides the cold weather there are several other things that can cause windshield cracks including minor car movements, excess moisture, falling debris, and loose rocks. Contact Expert Auto Glass, your Utah auto glass specialists, if you're in need of rock chip repair and we'll come to your home or work and repair your windshield on the spot!
